Wood County Seat

Houses in Quitman, TX

An East Texas county seat surrounded by pastureland and pine woods, minutes from Lake Fork's nationally known bass fishing.

Quitman is a small city in Wood County, Texas, and the county seat of a largely rural East Texas county. Named for John A. Quitman, a Mississippi governor and Mexican-American War officer, the city sits among rolling pastureland and pine woods in the Piney Woods region. The 2020 census counted roughly 1,900 residents, though the surrounding county adds a wider population that looks to Quitman for government services, schools, and commerce. Agriculture remains the backbone of the local economy, with cattle, hay, and timber shaping both the landscape and the rhythm of daily life. Drive a few minutes outside town in any direction and the scene turns to pasture and pine forest. The community tends toward older, rooted residents, joined by anglers and weekenders drawn by nearby Lake Fork. Lake Fork Reservoir, created in 1980 and located roughly 10 to 15 minutes north of town, is regarded as one of the premier bass-fishing lakes in the United States. It submerged the South Fork, Cowleech Fork, and Caddo forks that formed the headwaters of the Sabine River and now serves as a major regional water supply and recreation draw. Quitman functions as a convenient home base for anglers making the trip, and nearby Lake Tawakoni State Park adds fishing, boating, camping, and hiking opportunities. Public schools are operated by Quitman ISD, which enrolls more than 1,000 students across its campuses. The city's compact downtown and the Wood County courthouse anchor civic life for the surrounding county. Quitman suits residents seeking quiet East Texas country living, lake access, and a small-town pace.
