Frio River Hill Country Seat

Houses in Leakey, TX

Welcome to Leakey, the Real County seat on the Frio River in the Texas Hill Country, a gateway to Garner State Park and the region's famous swimming holes.

Leakey is a small city and the county seat of Real County, Texas, situated along the Frio River in the western Hill Country. Pronounced "LAY-kee," the town was settled in 1856 and named for John H. Leakey, a Tennessee pioneer whose family helped shape the Frio Canyon. The 2020 census counted 315 residents, keeping Leakey among the state's smallest county seats and one of its most sparsely populated areas. The town anchors the Frio Canyon, a landscape of limestone hills, spring-fed creeks, and the cool, clear Frio River that gives the area its name and its seasonal identity. Human habitation in the canyon reaches back thousands of years, and by the late 19th century the area had become a ranching outpost. Angora goat raising, cattle, and sheep built the early economy, and the surrounding rangeland still defines much of Real County, which was carved from Edwards, Bandera, and Kerr counties in 1913. The town's fortunes rose and fell with ranching cycles through the early 20th century, but the enduring assets have always been the river, the climate, and the terrain. In recent decades, river recreation and Hill Country tourism have become the area's primary economic and cultural currents. Summer visitors arrive by the thousands to swim, tube, kayak, and camp along the Frio, and Leakey functions as a supply, dining, and services stop for the broader Frio Canyon, including Garner State Park to the north. The town is also a well-known waypoint for motorcyclists riding the Three Sisters ranch roads, giving its small commercial strip a steady flow of travelers through much of the year. Leakey suits people drawn to a quiet, rural Hill Country lifestyle with exceptional access to rivers, parks, and scenic roads. Services are limited to the basics along U.S. Highway 83, and daily life is unhurried and self-reliant. The nearest larger towns and regional amenities are reached by long highway drives through the surrounding hills, which keeps the area's character remote, its pace deliberate, and its appeal rooted in landscape rather than convenience.
