Cradle of Texas Independence

About Gonzales, TX

Welcome to Gonzales, the Gonzales County seat on the Guadalupe River known as the Cradle of Texas Independence, where the first shot of the Texas Revolution was fired in 1835.

Gonzales is a city and the seat of Gonzales County, Texas, set on the Guadalupe River between San Antonio and Houston in south-central Texas. With a population of about 7,300, it anchors a largely agricultural county of rolling prairies and river bottoms, and it sits near Interstate 10 along the corridor between the state's two largest cities. Gonzales holds a singular place in Texas history. On October 2, 1835, Texian colonists refused to surrender a small cannon to Mexican troops, raising a banner bearing the words "Come and Take It" and firing the shot that opened the Texas Revolution. That confrontation, the Battle of Gonzales, earned the city its identity as the Cradle of Texas Independence. Nine Texas historical markers in and around Gonzales commemorate the locations tied to the battle's prelude, and the event is re-enacted each October. The city's built environment reflects that long history. Gonzales has an unusually high concentration of historic houses and commercial buildings, with a Romanesque Revival courthouse and Victorian-era residences clustered around the courthouse square. The historic core is recognized among Texas's best-preserved old-house neighborhoods. Modern Gonzales is a quiet county seat with a walkable downtown of shops and eateries, a strong civic calendar, and a school system centered on the Gonzales Independent School District. Recreation centers on the Guadalupe and San Marcos rivers, and Palmetto State Park, with its dwarf palmettos, sits a short drive to the west. Gonzales appeals to those drawn to Texas history, small-town life, and the open country of the central Texas corridor, with San Antonio and Houston within easy reach for work and regional travel.

City Guide

About Gonzales

Real Estate & Housing

Gonzales's housing stock is anchored by its historic core. Victorian and early twentieth-century homes on established, tree-shaded lots surround the courthouse square, and the city's concentration of well-preserved older houses is among the most notable in central Texas. Beyond downtown, mid-century and newer homes fill the city's edges, while surrounding Gonzales County offers acreage, ranch properties, and smaller farmsteads for buyers seeking country living close to town.

Neighborhoods

Gonzales lacks the formal subdivisions of larger cities but has distinct areas defined by age and character. The historic core around the courthouse square holds the oldest residential streets, with Victorian and early twentieth-century homes on mature lots. Farther out, mid-century neighborhoods and newer housing spread toward the highways, and the surrounding countryside adds scattered ranches and acreage. The Guadalupe River and its parks give several neighborhoods a scenic, tree-lined setting.

Lifestyle in Gonzales

Gonzales offers a relaxed, history-rich small-town lifestyle. The courthouse square and compact downtown hold local shops, eateries, and civic institutions, and the annual Come and Take It celebration each October anchors the community calendar. Daily life moves at a measured pace, with county government, agriculture, and small business forming the economic backbone. Residents enjoy the river setting and easy access to San Antonio and Houston while living in a town where Texas history is part of the everyday landscape.

Schools & Education

Gonzales is served by the Gonzales Independent School District, a community district that operates five schools and enrolls about 2,500 students. The district provides pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade for the city and surrounding Gonzales County, with athletics and school events playing a central role in local life. Families seeking additional options can find other districts and private schools in the wider south-central Texas region.

Getting Around

Gonzales sits in a convenient corridor between San Antonio and Houston, with Interstate 10 passing through Gonzales County and U.S. highways 90, 90A, 87, and 183 serving the city directly. San Antonio lies to the west and Houston to the east, both within a roughly one-to-two-hour drive, while Austin is reachable to the north. Daily travel is car-based, with the county's highway network connecting Gonzales to nearby towns such as Luling, Seguin, and Cuero.

Parks & Recreation

Palmetto State Park, a short drive west of Gonzales, is the area's outdoor centerpiece, with dwarf palmettos, shady trails, and fishing and paddling on the San Marcos River. The Guadalupe River runs through the city itself, providing additional river access and scenic spots. The Pioneer Village Living History Center recreates nineteenth-century life, and the city's many historical markers tell the story of the Texas Revolution. The Come and Take It celebration each October draws visitors from across the region.
