Guadalupe County Railroad Town

About Kingsbury, TX

Welcome to Kingsbury, a small Guadalupe County town set along U.S. Highway 90 about ten miles northeast of Seguin and within the San Antonio metropolitan area.

Kingsbury is a small incorporated community in northeastern Guadalupe County, Texas, situated along U.S. Highway 90 roughly ten miles northeast of Seguin. It lies within the San Antonio metropolitan statistical area, a location that keeps residents within commuting reach of Seguin, New Braunfels, and San Antonio while the town itself retains a distinctly rural, unhurried character. The settlement traces its origins to the early 1870s, when Sam Neel, an agent for English settlers, built a home near the present townsite. The Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway arrived in 1875 and brought a post office that same year; the townsite was formally laid out in 1876 and named for William Kingsbury, a railroad official. The community grew as a small agricultural and railroad stop, developing gristmills, cotton gins, stores, churches, and schools through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. For most of its history, Kingsbury's economy has been tied to oil and agriculture, and those influences still shape the landscape today, with farmland, pasture, and modest rural homesteads surrounding the small residential and commercial core near the highway. The town recorded 132 residents in the 2020 census, reflecting its standing as one of Guadalupe County's smaller communities rather than a suburban growth center. Life in Kingsbury is quiet and small-town in scale. Public-school students attend schools in the Seguin Independent School District, and everyday services, shopping, and employment are a short drive away in Seguin. The surrounding countryside offers access to the San Marcos River and nearby Palmetto State Park, known for its dwarf palmetto groves, easy trails, and river recreation. Kingsbury appeals to residents seeking rural acreage and a slower pace while remaining connected to the San Antonio region by highway.

City Guide

About Kingsbury

Real Estate & Housing

Kingsbury's housing landscape reflects its rural and small-town origins. Homesites are spread across a mix of agricultural acreage, pastureland, and lightly developed residential parcels, with housing concentrated near the U.S. Highway 90 corridor and along the county roads that branch off it. Much of the surrounding land remains in farm and ranch use, so buyers in the area are often looking for larger lots, room for livestock or equipment, and a degree of separation between neighbors. The built environment mixes older rural homes with newer construction, and the community's modest size means housing stock is limited in number rather than arranged in large master-planned subdivisions.

Neighborhoods

Lifestyle in Kingsbury

Kingsbury offers the quiet rhythms of a small Texas town shaped by railroad and agricultural heritage. Daily life centers on the home and the land rather than a downtown commercial district, with groceries, dining, and services concentrated a short drive away in Seguin. The community's identity is rooted in its history as a nineteenth-century rail stop, and that past remains visible in the town's layout and its long-standing families. For residents who value open space, a slower pace, and a rural setting while keeping highway access to the San Antonio area, Kingsbury provides a low-density alternative to the region's faster-growing suburban corridors.

Schools & Education

Students in the Kingsbury area are served by the Seguin Independent School District, based in the county seat about ten miles to the southwest. The district operates elementary, intermediate, and secondary campuses across the Seguin area, providing the public-education pathway for Kingsbury families from early childhood through high school. Because Kingsbury itself is small, school-age residents typically travel into Seguin for classes, athletics, and extracurricular activities, and the district's facilities anchor the community's educational life.

Getting Around

Kingsbury sits on U.S. Highway 90, the east-west route that carried travelers and freight through the region long before the interstate system. Its location about ten miles northeast of Seguin places residents close to Interstate 10, which runs through Seguin toward San Antonio and Houston. San Antonio lies roughly an hour to the west, while New Braunfels and the I-35 corridor are within about thirty minutes. The town's founding was tied directly to the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway, and although rail service no longer defines the community, the highway network continues to anchor its connection to the broader San Antonio metropolitan area.

Parks & Recreation

Kingsbury's recreational appeal is anchored by the surrounding river landscape. Palmetto State Park, a Texas Parks and Wildlife property a short drive away, is known for its dwarf palmetto groves, easy trails, and access to the San Marcos River for paddling and tubing. The river itself is a regional draw for fishing and floating. Kingsbury also hosts Wahwahtaysee Resort, a riverside glamping destination, and the quiet county roads around town offer low-traffic routes for walking and cycling. Regional parks, lakes, and attractions in Seguin and New Braunfels extend the outdoor options within a short drive.
