Dinosaur Capital of Texas

About Glen Rose, TX

Welcome to Glen Rose, the Somervell County seat on the Paluxy River, where fossilized dinosaur tracks and a wildlife center anchor Texas Hill Country living.

Glen Rose is the county seat of Somervell County, Texas, on the Paluxy River in the rolling hills of North Texas about 55 miles southwest of Fort Worth. With roughly 3,200 residents, it is a small courthouse-square town that has become one of the state's most distinctive destinations, thanks to the natural history preserved in its riverbed. The town is widely known as the Dinosaur Capital of Texas. Dinosaur Valley State Park, just outside the city, protects genuine fossilized dinosaur footprints pressed into the limestone of the Paluxy River, drawing paleontology-minded visitors and families from across the region. Nearby, Fossil Rim Wildlife Center conducts endangered-species breeding programs across its drive-through hills, and the Paluxy River itself anchors swimming, wading, and fishing at Big Rocks Park. Glen Rose's history runs through its town square. The Somervell County Courthouse, built in 1892, still anchors the center of town, and Barnard's Mill and the Somervell County Museum preserve the area's frontier past. During Prohibition the surrounding woods earned a reputation as moonshine country, and the town's frontier and ranching roots remain visible in its rodeos and community events. The Texas Amphitheatre presents an outdoor passion play each season. Glen Rose ISD serves local students, and the town's housing ranges from in-town ranch houses and brick cottages to rural acreage and newer developments along Highway 144. Its position between the Paluxy River valley and the Brazos River country gives it a landscape of limestone bluffs, wooded draws, and open ranchland. For those seeking a quiet, nature-oriented small town within reach of the Metroplex, Glen Rose offers a distinctive blend of Hill Country scenery, dinosaur history, and small-town Texas character.
