They called the site Edgewood for its wooded-edge setting. By 1881 the young settlement had a hotel and a blacksmith shop and was firmly established as a Texas and Pacific stop, drawing new settlers from Mississippi and beyond. The old Star Route, now State Highway 859, connected the depot to Canton and anchored the town's early growth. Today Edgewood remains a compact, rural community of roughly 1,800 residents. It is served by the Edgewood Independent School District, whose Bulldogs athletic teams are a focal point of local life. The town's housing is overwhelmingly single-family and owner-occupied, with single-story homes and larger rural lots common across the area. Edgewood's appeal lies in its blend of small-town comfort and East Texas countryside.
