Van Zandt County Railroad Town

About Edgewood, TX

Welcome to Edgewood, a small Van Zandt County town founded as an 1878 Texas & Pacific Railroad depot, set on the edge of the East Texas woodlands north of Canton.

Edgewood is a small incorporated town in Van Zandt County, Texas, in the eastern part of the state roughly halfway between the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex to the west and Tyler to the east. The town sits at the transition between two of Texas's major ecological regions, the Post Oak Savannah and the Blackland Prairie, and its name comes directly from its location on the edge of a woodland along that boundary. The community was founded in 1878, when residents of nearby Canton, which had just won a county seat dispute, built a shipping depot on the newly laid Texas and Pacific Railroad tracks nine miles north of town. They called the site Edgewood for its wooded-edge setting. By 1881 the young settlement had a hotel and a blacksmith shop and was firmly established as a Texas and Pacific stop, drawing new settlers from Mississippi and beyond. The old Star Route, now State Highway 859, connected the depot to Canton and anchored the town's early growth. Today Edgewood remains a compact, rural community of roughly 1,800 residents. It is served by the Edgewood Independent School District, whose Bulldogs athletic teams are a focal point of local life. The town's housing is overwhelmingly single-family and owner-occupied, with single-story homes and larger rural lots common across the area. Edgewood's appeal lies in its blend of small-town comfort and East Texas countryside. It sits close to Canton, home of the First Monday Trade Days market, and within reach of area lakes and walking trails. For homebuyers, Edgewood offers an affordable, slower-paced alternative to the Dallas-Fort Worth region while keeping the metroplex and the city of Tyler accessible by highway.

City Guide

About Edgewood

Real Estate & Housing

Housing in Edgewood is predominantly single-family and small-town in character, with single-story homes being especially common. The community maintains a high rate of homeownership, reflecting a stable, established population rather than a transient market. Homes sit on a mix of in-town lots and larger rural tracts, with some properties offering acreage and open space characteristic of Van Zandt County's countryside. The housing stock ranges from older, established homes near the original railroad-era core to newer construction on the town's edges, and the market generally serves buyers seeking affordability, space, and a quieter pace than the nearby Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

Neighborhoods

As a small town, Edgewood functions largely as a single community rather than a collection of formal subdivisions. The older in-town streets cluster around the historic railroad corridor and State Highway 859, retaining the compact layout established in the late nineteenth century. Around this core, residential streets fan outward into newer single-family construction, while the surrounding county roads feature scattered homesites on larger lots. This blend of a walkable, historic center and open rural periphery gives Edgewood its distinctive small-town texture, with no single dominant subdivision shaping the town's identity.

Lifestyle in Edgewood

Life in Edgewood is quiet, small-town East Texas living. The community's rhythm centers on schools, local churches, and the surrounding countryside, with a pace that remains deliberately unhurried. Its location just north of Canton gives residents easy access to one of the region's biggest draws, the First Monday Trade Days, a sprawling outdoor market held monthly and visited by shoppers from across Texas and beyond. Day-to-day conveniences are found locally and in nearby Canton, while the broader Dallas-Fort Worth region lies to the west for those who make occasional trips into the metroplex.

Schools & Education

Edgewood is served by the Edgewood Independent School District, a small public system centered on the town and its surrounding attendance area. The district's identity is wrapped up in the Edgewood Bulldogs, with athletics and school activities playing a central role in community life. Campuses include Edgewood High School and Edgewood Middle School, along with elementary facilities, serving families across the area. The district's hometown values and close ties to the community reflect Edgewood's small-town character, and its centralized campus structure means students attend schools within the town rather than traveling to a larger regional district.

Getting Around

Edgewood's transportation story begins with the Texas and Pacific Railroad, which gave the town its start in 1878 and remains part of its identity. For road travel, State Highway 859, the old Star Route, connects Edgewood directly to Canton nine miles to the south, where Interstate 20 provides east-west access across East Texas toward Dallas-Fort Worth and Tyler. This positioning places Edgewood within reasonable driving range of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex while keeping the town itself removed from major traffic corridors. The rural road network of Van Zandt County serves daily travel, and the town's compact size means most local destinations are a short drive away.

Parks & Recreation

Edgewood's biggest nearby attraction is Canton's First Monday Trade Days, one of the largest and longest-running outdoor markets in the country, drawing visitors to Van Zandt County every month. For outdoor recreation, the area offers Canton City Lake, also known as Mill Creek Reservoir, with a boat ramp for fishing and sailing, and Cherry Creek Park, part of a network of walking trails that have earned Canton the nickname "The Walking Capital of Texas." The surrounding East Texas countryside provides opportunities for fishing, boating, and rural exploration, and the First Monday Park and Civic Center host events and provide RV facilities for visitors.
