Central Texas Historic Arts Village

Rentals in Salado, TX

Welcome to Salado, a historic arts village on spring-fed Salado Creek in Bell County, set along Interstate 35 between Waco and Austin.

Salado is a village in Bell County, Texas, set on spring-fed Salado Creek along Interstate 35, roughly midway between Waco and Austin. With a population of about 2,400 residents and a land area under three square miles, it is one of Central Texas's most distinctive small communities. The village was first incorporated in 1867 for the purpose of building a bridge across Salado Creek, and it grew into an early center of education and agriculture: it was home to one of the first co-educational colleges in the state, Salado College, and to the first farmers' Grange organized in Texas in 1873. Salado also served as a stop on the historic Chisholm Trail. Today Salado is best known for its preserved 19th-century character and its thriving arts scene. The Texas Commission on the Arts has designated the village a state cultural district, and its historic Main Street is lined with art galleries, boutiques, antique shops, restaurants, and studios. The Stagecoach Inn, founded as Shady Villa in 1860, remains a landmark, and the Tablerock Amphitheatre hosts vaudeville-style performances. Annual events such as the August Art Fair, the Christmas Stroll, and the Gathering of the Scottish Clans bring thousands of visitors to the village. Residents enjoy a quiet, small-town lifestyle with convenient access to larger cities. Interstate 35 runs along the village, placing Temple and Belton less than 30 minutes away, Killeen within an easy drive, and Austin about an hour south. Salado Independent School District serves local students, and creek-side parks such as Pace Park provide gathering and recreation space. The village's combination of history, culture, and highway access appeals to those seeking a distinctive Central Texas community.
