River Town in Caldwell County

Rentals in Martindale, TX

Welcome to Martindale, a small Caldwell County city on the San Marcos River, part of the Austin metro area about five miles east of San Marcos.

Martindale is a small city in northern Caldwell County, Texas, set along the San Marcos River about five miles east of San Marcos and roughly 35 miles south of Austin. As part of the Austin metropolitan area, it offers a distinctly rural counterpoint to the region's growth — a river town of around 1,250 residents with historic buildings, shaded streets, and open farmland at its edges. The town was established in 1855 by the Martindale family, who donated land for the townsite and gave the community its name. The fertile bottomlands along the San Marcos River made the area a natural fit for farming, and for generations Martindale served as an agricultural center; by the mid-twentieth century, local seed companies were supplying a substantial share of the hybrid seed corn and pedigreed cottonseed produced in Texas. Martindale incorporated in 1982, becoming the third city in Caldwell County. Today the San Marcos River is Martindale's defining asset. The spring-fed river rises in San Marcos and flows clear and cool through the area, supporting a busy recreation economy, with tube and kayak outfitters such as Don's Fish Camp and Texas State Tubes launching floaters along the Martindale stretch. The river also draws anglers, paddlers, and swimmers, and its banks anchor the town's relaxed, outdoorsy identity. Commutes to San Marcos and the Interstate 35 corridor are short, putting Texas State University, outlet shopping, and a full range of services within minutes, while Austin and San Antonio are within a manageable drive. The Lockhart Independent School District serves local students. Who Martindale suits: it appeals to those who want small-town, riverside living within easy reach of San Marcos, San Antonio, and Austin — particularly buyers drawn to water access, older homes with character, and a slower pace than the surrounding metro area.
