Planned City on the Texas Gulf Coast

Condos & Apartments in Lake Jackson, TX

Welcome to Lake Jackson, a Brazoria County city planned by Dow Chemical in the 1940s, set on the Texas Gulf Coast 50 miles south of Houston.

Lake Jackson is a city in Brazoria County, Texas, on the Gulf Coast about 50 miles south of Houston. It is the largest city in the Brazosport area, a cluster of eight communities that also includes Freeport, Clute, and Surfside Beach, and it functions as the region's retail, educational, and residential anchor. The city's origin story is distinctive. When Dow Chemical launched its Texas operations in Freeport in the early 1940s, extracting magnesium from seawater for the war effort, the company needed housing for its workforce. In 1942, Dow purchased the former Abner Jackson plantation and developed a model community, designed by architect Alden B. Dow, that took its name from the plantation's oxbow lake. The result was a carefully planned town — a rarity in mid-century Texas — with a central park, curving oak-lined streets, and a deliberate civic layout that earned it the nickname "City of Enchantment." That planned foundation still shapes Lake Jackson today. Its downtown is organized around a park and civic core, its neighborhoods are shaded by mature oaks, and the city retains a strong sense of order and community pride. The economy remains closely tied to Dow's Texas Operations and the surrounding petrochemical industry, which together sustain a stable professional and industrial workforce. Education anchors the community. Brazosport Independent School District serves the area with two high schools, and Brazosport College, in the city since 1968, provides higher education and workforce training. Sea Center Texas, a 75-acre Texas Parks and Wildlife marine aquarium and fish hatchery, is a signature regional attraction, and the Gulf beaches at Surfside sit just minutes away. Lake Jackson suits families and professionals tied to the Gulf Coast's industrial economy, households seeking a well-planned, amenity-rich city at a coastal remove from Houston, and buyers who value beach access, strong institutions, and an established community feel.
