Gateway to Richland-Chambers Lake

Townhouses & Duplexes in Kerens, TX

Welcome to Kerens, a small Navarro County city that grew up around the Cotton Belt Railroad and now sits at the gateway to Richland-Chambers Reservoir.

Kerens is a small city in northeastern Navarro County, Texas, set among gently rolling farmland about fifteen miles southeast of Corsicana, the county seat, and roughly an hour southeast of the Dallas–Fort Worth area. Texas State Highway 31 runs through the community, connecting it to Corsicana to the northwest and Athens to the east. Its location at the edge of Richland-Chambers Reservoir, one of the largest inland lakes in Texas, gives this otherwise quiet farm town a distinctly lake-oriented dimension. The city traces its origins to 1881, when the St. Louis Southwestern Railway of Texas — long known as the Cotton Belt — pushed its line through Navarro County. A settlement grew around the new rail stop and was named for Judge Richard C. Kerens, a railroad and investment figure associated with the line's construction. For generations Kerens served as a cotton-shipping point and small trade center for the surrounding farm country, and that agricultural identity still shapes the rhythm and scale of the town. The population has held relatively steady in recent decades, hovering around 1,500 to 1,700 residents. Today Kerens is a compact, close-knit community centered on its school, its churches, and the modest commercial district near the old rail corridor. The single Kerens ISD campus enrolls the community's students from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade, making the school both an educational anchor and a social gathering point. Agriculture and related services remain part of the local economy, while the reservoir south of town draws anglers, boaters, and weekend residents seeking waterfront access. Kerens suits households looking for small-town East Texas life with room to spread out, whether that means a home in town, acreage in the surrounding countryside, or a lake-access property near Richland-Chambers Reservoir. Its position off Highway 31 keeps larger amenities in Corsicana — and the wider Dallas market — within reach, while day-to-day life stays unhurried and neighborly.
