Hill Country Lake Community

Townhouses & Duplexes in Canyon Lake, TX

Welcome to Canyon Lake, a Comal County lake community on the Guadalupe River, set in the Hill Country between Austin and San Antonio.

Canyon Lake is a census-designated place in Comal County, Texas, in the heart of the Hill Country between Austin and San Antonio. It is built around the Canyon Lake reservoir on the Guadalupe River, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers impoundment roughly 12 miles northwest of New Braunfels. The 2020 census counted about 31,100 residents, making the Canyon Lake community one of the largest lakeside population centers in Central Texas and a major hub of recreation, resort activity, and Hill Country living. The lake is a product of mid-20th-century federal flood-control policy. Congress authorized the project in the River and Harbor Act of 1945, and construction of Canyon Dam began in 1958. Filling the reservoir submerged a portion of the Guadalupe River valley, including the rural communities of Cranes Mill and Hancock, and transformed northern Comal County's economy from farming and ranching toward tourism, recreation, and residential growth. The dam continues to serve flood control, water supply, and hydropower functions for the region. Today the Canyon Lake area functions as a lake-oriented residential and recreational community. The Army Corps of Engineers operates seven major parks around the shoreline, and the local Water Oriented Recreation District manages additional boat ramps, swim beaches, and paddling trails. Boating, sailing, water skiing, fishing, and scuba diving are everyday pursuits, while the Guadalupe River's tailwaters below the dam support a notable trout fishery and seasonal tubing. The community's economy rests on recreation, hospitality, and services, supplemented by residents who commute to New Braunfels, San Antonio, or Austin. Education is provided by Comal Independent School District, a large and growing district that serves Comal County and portions of neighboring counties, including Canyon Lake High School within the community. For homebuyers, Canyon Lake offers lakefront homes, Hill Country acreage, and a setting that pairs outdoor recreation with access to two of Texas's largest metropolitan economies.
