Hill Country Crossroads & College Town

Condos & Apartments in Brownwood, TX

The Brown County seat on the northern edge of the Texas Hill Country, home to Howard Payne University, Lake Brownwood, and a revitalized historic downtown.

Brownwood is the county seat of Brown County, Texas, located in the heart of central Texas on the northern edge of the Hill Country. It sits roughly 120 miles southwest of Dallas-Fort Worth, 130 miles northwest of Austin, and 190 miles northwest of San Antonio, positioning it as a regional hub for a wide swath of ranch country. The area's history runs deep. Brown County, established in 1856 and organized in 1858, was named for Captain Henry Stevenson Brown, a Texas revolutionary soldier who fought at the Battle of Velasco and was among the first known Texans to cross the region. Brownwood itself was incorporated in 1884 and grew as a railroad, ranching, and commercial center. During World War II, the construction of Camp Bowie south of town brought a military training installation and a major economic and population surge. Education has long been central to the city's identity. Howard Payne University, a private university affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas, was founded in 1889 and remains a cornerstone institution, later absorbing the Presbyterian-founded Daniel Baker College. The university brings students, athletics, and cultural programming to the community and anchors a college-town atmosphere. Today Brownwood's economy rests on education, healthcare, manufacturing, and regional retail, supported by agriculture and ranching across the county. The city's historic downtown has been revitalized around the Lyric Theatre, the courthouse square, local shops, and a mural trail, while Lake Brownwood and the Pecan Bayou anchor recreation. Residents are served by Brownwood ISD and enjoy a low cost of living, a friendly small-town pace, and access to the Hill Country's lakes and scenery. It appeals to families, retirees, and students seeking an authentic central Texas community.
